Below are the confirmed 2026-2027 Nebraska waterfowl season dates, zones, and bag limits, straight from the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission, along with what they mean for a hunt here on the Platte River.
Nebraska sits in the heart of the Central Flyway, and its seasons are set each year by the state within federal frameworks established by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. The Game and Parks Commission approved the 2026-2027 seasons at its March 20, 2026 meeting, and this year brings a notable change: Nebraska has moved to a new three duck-zone configuration that will run through 2030.
How Nebraska's duck zones work
Nebraska is split into duck zones so that season dates can better match when birds actually move through different parts of the state. For 2026-2030, the state uses three duck zones instead of the previous four. Running across all of it is the federal "High Plains line," which roughly follows the 100th Meridian. Hunters west of that line, in the High Plains Mallard Management Unit, receive additional late-season hunting days.

In practical terms, that means classic Central Flyway timing: a strong push of ducks and geese from the opener through the late-season cold fronts. 2026-2027 Nebraska duck season dates
Here are the approved 2026-2027 duck and coot season dates by zone, plus the early teal and youth seasons:
- Zone 1: Oct. 24 to Dec. 6, and Dec. 19 to Jan. 17
- Zone 2: Oct. 3 to Dec. 15, and Jan. 6 to 27 (High Plains)
- Zone 3: Oct. 24 to Jan. 5, and Jan. 6 to 27 (High Plains)
- Early Teal (statewide): Sept. 5 to 13
- Youth, Veteran & Active-Duty: Zone 1 Oct. 17 to 18 · Zone 2 Sept. 26 to 27 · Zone 3 Oct. 17 to 18

Nebraska duck bag limits for 2026-2027
Nebraska uses a two-tier daily bag limit for ducks:
- Tier 1: six ducks per day, with species restrictions
- Tier 2: three ducks per day, any species, any sex
- Possession limit: three times the daily bag limit

Nebraska goose seasons 2026-2027
Geese are a huge part of a Platte River hunt, and River Lodge falls in the Platte River dark goose unit. The confirmed 2026-2027 goose seasons are:
- Dark goose, Platte River Unit: Oct. 28 to Feb. 9 (daily bag five, possession 15)
- White-fronted goose (statewide): Oct. 17 to Dec. 27, and Jan. 25 to Feb. 9 (daily bag two)
- Light goose regular (statewide): Oct. 3 to Dec. 30, and Jan. 25 to Feb. 9 (daily bag 50)
- Light Goose Conservation Order: begins Feb. 10 (no daily bag or possession limits)

When is the best time to duck hunt in Nebraska?
The season is long, but the migration has rhythm. Early season leans on local birds and Canada geese. The middle of the season usually brings the heaviest duck migration through the Platte River valley. Late season, when hard cold fronts push northern birds south, can produce outstanding mallard and light-goose hunting. Because we host a limited number of private groups and peak-migration dates fill first, it pays to reserve early.
