Nebraska is one of the best goose states in the country, and the Nebraska goose season is long enough that you can hunt geese from the first week of October well into February. The catch is that goose dates work differently from duck dates. Canada geese are set by unit, white-fronted and light geese run statewide, and the spring conservation order follows its own zones. Here is every 2026-2027 goose date and bag limit in one place, confirmed from the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission, plus what it all means for a hunt on the Platte River.
If you are hunting ducks on the same trip, our companion guide covers the 2026-2027 Nebraska duck season dates, zones, and bag limits. Most of our groups hunt both, often in the same morning.
How Nebraska goose seasons are organized
Nebraska splits its goose hunting three ways. Dark geese, meaning Canada geese and their smaller cousins the cackling geese, are managed by unit, and each unit has its own season. White-fronted geese, the specklebellies, have a single statewide season. Light geese, meaning snow and Ross's geese, have a regular statewide fall and winter season and then a separate spring conservation order once the regular season closes.
That structure matters when you plan a trip, because a hunt in mid-February can still be legal for one group of geese and closed for another. The dates below are the full 2026-2027 picture.
2026-2027 Nebraska dark goose (Canada goose) season
Canada goose dates depend on the unit you hunt in:
- Platte River Unit: Oct. 28, 2026 to Feb. 9, 2027
- Niobrara Unit: Oct. 28, 2026 to Feb. 9, 2027
- North Central Unit: Oct. 3, 2026 to Jan. 15, 2027
- Daily bag: five dark geese · Possession: 15
River Lodge sits on the Platte River near Overton, inside the Platte River Unit, so our Canada goose season runs from Oct. 28 all the way to Feb. 9. That is more than three months of legal goose hunting on some of the most famous goose water in the Central Flyway.
White-fronted goose and light goose seasons
Specklebellies and snow geese both run statewide, with a split that pauses hunting in early January and reopens late in the month:
- White-fronted geese: Oct. 17 to Dec. 27, 2026, and Jan. 25 to Feb. 9, 2027 · daily bag two, possession six
- Light geese (regular season): Oct. 3 to Dec. 30, 2026, and Jan. 25 to Feb. 9, 2027 · daily bag 50, no possession limit
Because the dark goose season on the Platte runs straight through January while the white-fronted and light goose seasons take a break, mid-January hunts here are typically Canada goose and duck hunts. By late January all three are open again, which can make the final two weeks of the season some of the most varied shooting of the year.
The spring light goose conservation order
When the regular season closes, the Light Goose Conservation Order opens to reduce overabundant snow and Ross's goose populations. For 2027 it runs by zone:
- East Zone: Feb. 10 to April 15, 2027
- West Zone: Feb. 10 to April 5, 2027
- Rainwater Basin Zone: Feb. 10 to April 5, 2027
- Daily bag and possession: no limits
The conservation order carries its own rules and permit requirements, separate from the fall season, so check the current Nebraska Game and Parks guidance before you plan a spring snow goose trip.
What Canada goose hunting on the Platte River looks like
The Platte is a goose river for a simple reason. Its wide, shallow, braided channels stay open when ponds and sloughs freeze, which gives geese a safe place to roost through the coldest part of the winter. Every morning they lift off the river and fly out to feed in the surrounding corn and bean stubble, and every afternoon they come back. Hunting geese here is about getting into that daily pattern.
On a typical morning your guide will have scouted the birds the day before and set a field spread or a river setup where they want to be. Field hunts usually mean layout blinds or pits tucked into stubble, with big decoy spreads set long before shooting light. River hunts put you along the sandbars where geese loaf and drink. When a family group of honkers sets its wings and drops into the spread, it is one of the great sights in waterfowling, and our guided Nebraska duck and goose hunts are built to put you under exactly that kind of flight.
Geese and ducks share the same water and the same mornings here, so a mixed bag is common. If you want to know how the whole day runs, from breakfast in the dark to lunch back at the lodge, read our walk-through of what a guided day on the Platte River looks like.
When is the best time to goose hunt in Nebraska?
Early season gives you local Canada geese that have not seen many decoys, plus mild weather. The real show usually starts once hard cold fronts push northern birds down the Central Flyway in late November and December, and it peaks when snow and ice concentrate the geese on open river water. That late-season window is when the Platte earns its reputation, and it is why our lodge season runs November through January.
Late-season goose hunting also overlaps the upland season, which runs Oct. 31, 2026 to Jan. 31, 2027. A cold morning in a goose spread and an afternoon behind the dogs is one of the best combinations in wingshooting, and our Nebraska pheasant and quail guide covers that side of the trip.
Licenses, stamps, and the rules to know
Goose hunters in Nebraska generally need a Nebraska hunt permit, a Habitat Stamp, a Nebraska Migratory Waterfowl Stamp, HIP registration, and, for hunters 16 and older, a Federal Duck Stamp. Shooting hours, nontoxic shot rules, and unit boundaries all apply, and requirements can change from year to year. Our team walks every group through the current list before arrival, and our Guest Info and FAQs page covers packing, travel, and what to expect at the lodge.
